Planned activities in New York

This will be the third year Bronx Academy of Promise Charter School participates in International Walk to School Day. The students will learn about the benefits of living an active life style during Physical Education class and through the lessons supplied on the International Walk to School web site.

- BRONX ACADEMY OF PROMISE, BRONX

While we encourage as many students to walk or ride their bike to school; we are also aware of some students being limited by working parents. So, on Walk to School Days, we have all the students walk around the building into a back door so that everyone "walks" to school and nobody feels left out. This year, we are getting nearby elementary schools to participate too.

- CHERRY AVENUE, WEST SAYVILLE

Saints John and Paul School wants our community to increase concern for the environment, reduce speed near schools, and be aware of the need for area sidewalk improvements for safer/easier biking and walking environment. We will utilize banners, media, local law enforcement and all participants will receive earth friendly gifts for walking/biking and being more green! Go Jaguars!

We live in a great town and have a fabulous neighborhood school. We are very excited to be working with the Principal to get kids walking in their community and to raise awareness of childhood obesity in our community.

- ACCESS SAFETY CITY, NEW YORK

We plan on getting the entire school community invovled with International Walk to School Day on October 6th. Many staff members will be stationed at a variety of locations around our town and will be leading Walking School Buses. The Art Teacher will be making signs for the students and staff to hold as they walk around town, and the music teacher will be getting students to sing for us as we arrive at school following the walk. We are hoping to get the Fire Department and Police Department involved with this special event by leading the way for our walking school buses and by helping us teach our students about walking safety as well as the fitness benefits of walking. Hopefully we'll get 200 students, family members, and staff to participate in this awesome event.

- MOUNT KISCO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MOUNT KISCO

We are coordinating this year's event with the theme of "peace".

- MINOA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MINOA

Parents are notified and asked to team up with other parents to walk children to school together. On walk to school day, the entire school takes to the streets and circles the school twice at the beginning of the day. This allows for parents to join in prior to going to work.

- PS 255 BARBARA REING SCHOOL, BROOKLYN

We are walking for a second time this school year and combining our efforts with ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously). We will be walking on May 5th - ACES Day!

- LEE ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, WANTAGH

We have teachers supporting the event by being outside and welcoming kids. We give out prizes such as "MAS Walker" bracelets and orange and black (the school colors) shoelaces for the kids' sneakers. Each participating child has a punchcard and each day will get a different "punch" that they walked or biked that day. We hope next year to begin Walking Wednesdays to make this more than just two 1 week events per year, though we do already have many regular daily walkers.

- MAMARONCKE AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MAMARONECK
